Historical Note:

Rev. Joel Sanders (1814-1883) was born in Concordia Parish, Louisiana.  He was an itinerant Methodist minister who served congregations in Mississippi and Louisiana from 1836 to 1863.  In 1865, he moved to Cherokee County, Texas, where he died in 1883.

He served the following appointments in Mississippi and Louisiana (some dates are approximate): Concordia circuit (1837), Raleigh circuit (1838), Lake Washington circuit (1839-1840), Natchitoches circuit (1841), Caddo circuit (1842-1843), Natchitoches circuit (1844), D’Arbonne circuit (1845), Minden circuit (1847), Red River circuit (1849), Bossier circuit (1850), Jackson circuit (1851), Presiding Elder Shreveport district (1852), Presiding Elder Monroe and Ouachita districts (1853-1856), Grand Chenier mission (1859-1860), and Calcasieu circuit (1861-1863).

In 1840, Sanders married Elizabeth Mumford.  His second marriage was to Eunice H. Ashley in 1867.
